Convert any video or audio to MP3

One page for the whole set. Drop any video Wave supports - MP4, MKV, MOV, WEBM, WMV, and 18 more - or any audio file - WAV, FLAC, WMA, AAC, OGG, and more - and Wave writes MP3 at 192 kbps through LAME. Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing uploaded.

Under the hood

What actually happens

VIDEO or AUDIO source VIDEO skipped if present AUDIO any codec MP3 audio only AUDIO MP3 @ 192 kbps DECODE + ENCODE MP3 sources copy through bit-exact
One MP3 encoder, one target format, one universal output. Video tracks are discarded without decoding a frame; audio sources take the fast path when possible.

This page is Wave's MP3 converter as a standalone product - a widened variant of the video-to-MP3 page that also accepts audio-only sources. Drop a video and Wave discards the video track and re-encodes the audio to MP3 through libmp3lame at 192 kbps VBR. Drop a bare audio file (WAV, FLAC, WMA, OGG, AAC, AMR, AC-3, and more) and Wave decodes it to PCM and re-encodes the same way. When the source is already MP3 - either standalone or inside an AVI / FLV / MKV container - Wave copies the audio bytes bit-for-bit into a plain .mp3 file, skipping the decode-encode round trip entirely.

The 192 kbps VBR target is deliberate. LAME's -q:a 2 setting sits inside the "transparent to trained listeners on studio monitors" range for essentially every consumer source: music, voice, film audio, podcasts, lectures, radio archives. Going higher (256, 320 kbps) yields no perceptible improvement on any consumer playback chain; going lower (128 and below) starts showing high-frequency artefacts on cymbals, sibilants, and applause. The output MP3 plays on every device that plays sound, which is what MP3 has been for almost 30 years.

The audio-extract path is fast because video decoding is the expensive half of any conversion, and it's exactly the half this page skips. A one-hour 1080p video that would take several minutes to convert to MP4 becomes an 85 MB MP3 in 20-40 seconds on a modern laptop. Audio-only sources are faster still - the video track was never there to skip, so decode-plus-encode runs several times realtime on most CPUs. WAV to MP3 on an hour of audio finishes in under 30 seconds.

Multi-channel handling is honest here. AC-3 and DTS sources (DVD, Blu-ray, some MKV rips) carry 5.1 or 7.1 surround audio; Wave respects the Dolby downmix metadata (Lt/Rt and Lo/Ro coefficients) to fold surround into stereo without losing dialogue intelligibility. Object-based formats (Dolby Atmos on TrueHD, DTS-X) fold to their underlying 7.1 base without the height layer - which is a fundamental property of any stereo conversion, not something Wave decides to drop. WMA Pro 5.1 uses the standard SMPTE downmix coefficients when the source doesn't carry Dolby metadata.

Pick your source

Common source formats.

The most common sources people convert to MP3, each with its own dedicated conversion page. This hub handles any of them directly - the format-specific pages exist to answer the specific questions each source raises.

How to convert

Three steps.

  1. 01

    Step 1

Drop your video or audio file onto the card.

  2. 02

    Step 2

Wave inspects the file. MP3 is preselected; video sources let you switch to MP4 if you prefer.

  3. 03

    Step 3

    Convert. Save the MP3.

FAQ

Answers, specifically.

Does the file really stay on my device?

Yes. Wave loads a WebAssembly build of FFmpeg into the page and runs the whole conversion locally. You can open your browser's network tab while converting and confirm - no file bytes leave the tab.

Which formats can Wave read?

Every common video container: MP4, MKV, MOV, WEBM, AVI, WMV, FLV, TS, MTS, M2TS, 3GP, 3G2, MPEG, VOB, OGV, F4V, RM/RMVB, DivX, M4V, MXF, DV, AV1, ASF - and, on this page specifically, most audio containers too: MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus, WMA, AIFF, AMR, AC-3, and more.

Why does this page accept audio sources when the others don't?

Wave's main product is video → MP4 with MP3 as the audio-extract shortcut. Format-specific pages (mp4-to-mp3, mkv-to-mp3, etc.) match a specific source-format claim, so they reject anything else with a helpful hint. This page is the umbrella hub - "any video or audio → MP3" - so it accepts audio inputs directly.

What bitrate is the output MP3?

192 kbps VBR through LAME (libmp3lame -q:a 2). That falls inside the "transparent to trained listeners on studio monitors" range for essentially all music and voice content. Going higher (256 or 320 kbps) yields no perceptible improvement on consumer gear; going lower (128 and below) starts showing artefacts on cymbals, sibilants, and applause.

What happens with a WAV or FLAC input?

Uncompressed or losslessly-compressed PCM decodes to full samples, and LAME re-encodes to MP3 at 192 kbps VBR. Anything that was audible in the source is preserved; anything that only mattered above the perceptual threshold (24-bit depth beyond 16-bit, 96 kHz beyond 44.1 kHz) gets folded in the way any consumer playback chain would fold it anyway.

What if my source audio is already MP3?

When the source is a bare .mp3 file, Wave takes the fastest possible path: the audio bytes are copied through without a decode-encode round trip. The output is bit-for-bit identical to the source.

And if the source audio is already MP3 inside a video container (AVI, FLV, MKV)?

Same fast path. Wave inspects the container, sees an MP3 audio track, and extracts it without re-encoding. The DivX and older FLV / AVI archives that carry MP3 audio are the common cases; the output MP3 is bit-exact against the source audio track.

File-size ceiling?

Up to 8 GB per source file. Wave streams the source through the WebAssembly engine via WORKERFS in chunks, so the ceiling is your browser's decoder headroom, not RAM. Above 2 GB the widget shows a heads-up so you know the conversion will take a moment.

Can I extract just a portion of the audio (trim)?

Yes. After you drop the file, open Options and type a Start and End time under Trim, like 1:30 and 3:00; Wave encodes only that part to MP3. Times take tenths of a second too (0:42.5), and leaving End empty runs to the end of the file.

5.1 or 7.1 multi-channel input?

Downmixed to stereo before the MP3 encode. AC-3 and DTS sources carry explicit downmix metadata (Lt/Rt and Lo/Ro coefficients) that Wave respects. Object-based formats (Atmos, DTS-X) fold to their underlying stereo without the height layer.

Does ID3 metadata carry over?

Basic tags (title, artist if present) transfer to the MP3's ID3v2 frame. Album art doesn't transfer through the current pipeline - use a desktop tag editor if you need artwork.

Is any of this free? Any watermark?

Free. No sign-up, no trial, no per-file limit, no watermark on the output. Runs on Cloudflare Pages and the work happens on your device.
